Jamie was bitten by the music bug at a very early age. He started studying piano at age 5, and then started playing guitar at age 8. His first teacher, Candy Mack, started him on folk music, studying Peter, Paul, and Mary, Bob Dylan, the Limelighters, Joan Baez, etc. Jamie also studied at a young age with Steve Mack (Candy’s husband), Frankie Kogler, and the Seattle mainstay, Al Turay.
After moving to Southern California at age 18, Jamie studied with Steve and Al Learned, and Ron Eschete, and took courses from ‘Doc” Rutherford, at Costa Mesa’s Orange Coast College (OCC).
In 1976, he joined the band, Windsong, with Terry and Gail Craig on vocals, Paul Curry on keyboards and saxophone, and John Hurdler on drums. They traveled all around the states for 2 years, playing 5 to 6 nights a week, and gaining invaluable performing experience.
In 1978, Jamie attended the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT), which eventually became Musicians Institute. After graduating, Jamie was invited to join the prestigious staff, alongside Don Mock, Jimmy Wyble, Daniel Gilbert, Joe Diorio, Chuck Rainey, Howard Roberts, Robben Ford, Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Jim Lacefield, Putter Smith, Bob Magnusson, Les Wise, Mike Campbell, Norman Brown, amongst others.
After marrying in 1980, Jamie moved back to the PNW, where he performed and taught music, until returning to southern California in 1985. He returned to Musicians Institute, where he kept teaching till 2015.
In 1987, Jamie was invited to join the prominent staff at USC’s Studio/Jazz Guitar program, where he taught alongside John Clayton Jr. Shelly Berg, Ira Nepus, Dr. Thom Mason, etc.
Jamie has performed or recorded in duo, trio, on up to big band, with the likes of Tony Guerrero, Elizabeth Lamers, Sandy Simmons, Jimmy Seals, Plaz Johnson, Frank Sinatra Jr, Jeff Berlin, Brent Jensen, Alex Acuna, Dave Koz, Wes Dyring, Tierney Sutton, Gary Willis, Buddy Childers, Russ Garcia, Gary Foster, Duck Baker, Putter Smith, Dave Sills, Cathy Segal Garcia, Larry Koonse, John Pisano, Paul Horn, Jim Hughart, Chuck Berghoffer, to list but a few.
He has helped form and record with the Acoustic Jazz Quartet (on Naxos Jazz, and Origin Records), recorded for Acoustic Music Records (Germany), recorded and performed with the Steve Huffsteter Big Band
